The Craft of Ski Tuning
For more than two decades, Profile Ski & Snowboard Services has built its reputation on craftsmanship, consistency, and attention to detail.
From supporting Olympic and National Team athletes to serving Whistler locals season after season, Derek has spent decades refining the tuning process used in the shop today.
That process continues to evolve through feedback from athletes, ski professionals, instructors, and recreational skiers alike.
Meet Derek
Profile Ski and Snowboard Services was founded by Derek, whose passion for skiing and tuning skis began far from the mountains of British Columbia.
Derek developed his love for skiing while growing up in Nova Scotia. After graduating from high school, he made the move west to Whistler and began working at the legendary Jim McConkey Sport Shop. Over twelve seasons working within the Whistler ski community, his passion for the craft of ski tuning grew into a clear vision.
After two years of careful planning, Derek launched Profile Ski and Snowboard Services in 2003, building a shop focused on consistent high quality tuning and personal service.
Today, Derek remains deeply involved in the tuning process and personally trains the team to ensure every pair of skis reflects the same attention to detail that built the shop’s reputation.
Experience at the Highest Levels of the Sport
Derek’s expertise has been trusted in some of the most demanding environments in competitive skiing.
His growing reputation led to the opportunity to serve as Wax Technician for the Paralympic Snowboard Cross Team during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Building on that experience, Derek later joined the Canadian National Slopestyle Ski Team as a Wax Technician for the 2017 World Cup season, working alongside elite athletes competing at the highest levels of the sport.
The knowledge gained in these high-performance environments informs the standards used on every ski tuned at Profile.
Sharing the Craft
Beyond working with athletes, Derek has also dedicated years to teaching the next generation of ski technicians.
In 2013, Derek was invited by the Whistler Adventure School to lead an extensive Ski Tuning Course, a role he held for nearly a decade through 2022.
Through this program, Derek helped train aspiring technicians in the fundamentals of ski preparation, waxing, and tuning, and earned a Provincial Government Teaching Certificate for the subject matter — further reinforcing his reputation as one of the region’s most respected tuning experts.
This passion for teaching continues in the shop today, where Derek works closely with staff to ensure every ski is tuned to the same level of consistency.
